Behind the Lens: Kali N. Knudson
Where it started
My interest in photography began when I was three years old and my parents would let me run around the house with their old digital point and shoot camera. Flash forward to the beginning of high school, I got my first DSLR camera, a Canon Rebel T5i, and took a few high school photography classes. In 2018, during my freshman year of college at Ohio University, I started Kaptured by Kali Photography by taking professional headshots of my College of Business classmates. During undergrad, I added a Minor in Studio Art for both Photography and Graphic Design and upgraded my DSLR to a Nikon D850. Since then, I’ve begun my Master of Arts in Commercial Photography at Ohio University. In the beginning of 2023, I officially filed Kaptured by Kali Photography as an LLC!
More about me
I was born and raised in Athens, Ohio and I’m currently 23 years old. I’m very close with my family, have a dog with my parents, and a cat with my partner.
During my senior year of high school and first few years of college, I worked for three different local businesses including the College Bookstore, Silver Bridge Coffee Company, and Herbal Sage Tea Company. I’m drawn to smaller businesses that offer more hands-on experience and engagement. I really enjoy the creative aspects of marketing, specifically branding, promotional materials, photography, and graphic design.
I’m a very dedicated, hard worker and love being involved in all types of projects. I’m passionate about anything related to marketing and creativity, and I always try to go the extra mile. I also have many other interests, including: music and concerts, fashion, cars and motorcycles, collecting houseplants, anything regarding animals, and volunteering in the community.
Education and experience
I graduated from Athens High School in 2018 and graduated from Ohio University in April of 2022 with a 4.0 GPA as part of the Copeland Scholars Honors Program. I received my Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing with a Minor in Studio Art focused on Photography and Graphic Design. In August of 2022, I started my Master of Arts in Visual Communication, focused on Commercial Photography, at Ohio University through the Scripps College of Communication.
My educational focus in marketing was on the creative side, specifically branding and promotional materials, and I also took classes in nonprofit and digital marketing. Through my Studio Art Minor, I had the opportunity to take all eleven of the major-specific classes for both fine art photography and graphic design. Additionally, to broaden my own knowledge, I have taken classes in printmaking, CAD & SolidWorks, Retail Merchandising and Fashion Production, Picture Editing, and Social Media. I primarily work with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for photography, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign for graphic design, and Canva for smaller social media projects. During the 2022 Spring Semester, I also volunteered for the School of Art + Design in the photography darkroom in Seigfred Hall. I was the Schoonover Gallery Director my first year of grad school, and have now accepted the position of Print Lab Manager.
